WHAT IS KENNEL COUGH AND WHAT ARE YOUR POLICIES?
Kennel cough in dogs is similar to a chest cold in humans and unless there are other complicated issues present, the seriousness of the disease is about the same. It is highly contagious and unfortunately can easily be picked up anywhere, especially in places where there are other dogs present. Although we do require every dog to be up to date with their Bordetella vaccination, it is similar to the flu shot where it doesn't protect against every strain. The kennel cough symptoms usually show up 7-10 days after being exposed and unless there are other complicating factors involved, symptoms usually last for about 10 days. Dogs who are showing symptoms of kennel cough are not allowed in our facility and will be sent home with an emergency contact if symptoms present during their stay here. Symptoms include coughing, wheezing, mucus, loss of appetite, and lethargy. Dogs who have contracted the virus are welcome back a week after their last symptom clears. We advise you to consult your veterinarian with any questions about the virus and feel free to talk to our team with any concerns you may have.
